Getting Started with Your Terraria Server
Ready to dig, fight, and build in Terraria with your friends? Here's how to get started.
1. Find your server
Go to My Services and open your Terraria server to see the console, files, and settings.
2. Adjust serverconfig.txt
Under Files you'll find serverconfig.txt, where you can set:
world— the path to your world filemaxplayers— maximum number of playerspassword— optional passwordmotd— the message players see on login
3. Create or upload a world
The first time the server starts, you can generate a new world directly from the console. You can also upload an existing .wld file to the worlds folder.
4. Start the server
Click Start. Generating a large world can take a couple of minutes.
5. Connect to the server
Open Terraria, go to Multiplayer → Join via IP, and enter your server's IP address and port.
6. Install TShock (optional)
Want admin commands and plugin support? Switch to TShock under the Startup tab. Restart the server to enable it.
Tips
- Enable automatic backups of your world file before taking on a big boss fight.
- Use TShock's
/spawnbosscommand to test boss fights without hunting down the right items. - Set a hard player cap if the server starts lagging with many concurrent players.
