Minecraft Java vs. Bedrock Edition Explained

The difference between Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition, and which version your server should run.

Minecraft Java vs. Bedrock Edition — What's the Difference?

Minecraft comes in two different editions, which aren't compatible with each other out of the box. Here's the overview so you can pick the right server for you and your players.

Java Edition

Java Edition is the original version of Minecraft, built in the Java programming language. It's available on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Pros:

  • Full mod support via Forge, Fabric, and Quilt
  • Access to thousands of plugins via Paper/Spigot (permissions, minigames, economy systems, and more)
  • The largest and most active community, with the most tutorials and resources
  • Command blocks and redstone behave exactly as the community is used to

Cons:

  • Only PC players can join (no console or mobile)
  • Can be heavier to run with large modpacks

Bedrock Edition

Bedrock Edition is written in C++ and is used across Windows 10/11, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, mobile (iOS/Android), and VR.

Pros:

  • Cross-play — players on different platforms (mobile, console, PC) can play together on the same server
  • Better performance on weaker devices, faster load times
  • Built-in Marketplace with skins, texture packs, and maps

Cons:

  • No Forge/Fabric mod support — only "add-ons" (behavior/resource packs), which are far more limited
  • Fewer plugin options and a smaller plugin ecosystem than Java
  • Some redstone and game mechanics work slightly differently than in Java Edition

Can Java and Bedrock players play together?

Not directly — the two editions use different network protocols and aren't compatible with each other. However, there's proxy software like Geyser (often paired with Floodgate) that lets Bedrock players connect to a Java server. We can help you set up Geyser on your Potionhost Minecraft server if you want cross-play between Java and Bedrock.

Which one should you choose?

  • Want to use mods, plugins, and have a community that plays mostly on PC → Java Edition.
  • Want your players to join from mobile, console, and PC across platforms without hassle → Bedrock Edition (or Java + Geyser).

How to choose a version on your Potionhost server

Under the Startup tab in the control panel, you can choose the platform for your Minecraft server. See our guide on getting started with your Minecraft server for more setup details.
