Getting Started with Your Minecraft Server

How to order, configure, and connect to your new Minecraft server at Potionhost.

Getting Started with Your Minecraft Server

Your Minecraft server is ready to use within seconds of purchase. Here's everything you need to get started.

1. Order and receive your server

Once you purchase a Minecraft plan, your server is created automatically. You'll get a confirmation email, and the server appears under My Services in your control panel immediately.

2. Log into the control panel

Go to My Services and click your new Minecraft server. From here you have access to the console, file manager, backups, and settings.

3. Choose your version and platform

Under the Startup tab, choose which Minecraft version and platform (Vanilla, Paper, Spigot, Forge, or Fabric) your server should run. Change the platform, save, and restart the server to apply it.

4. Adjust basic settings

Under Files you'll find server.properties, where you can adjust:

  • max-players — maximum number of concurrent players
  • difficulty — peaceful, easy, normal, or hard
  • gamemode — survival, creative, adventure, or spectator
  • motd — the message shown in the server list

5. Start the server

Click Start in the console. The first boot typically takes 30-60 seconds while the world generates.

6. Connect to your server

Open Minecraft, go to MultiplayerAdd Server, and enter your server's IP address and port (shown at the top of the control panel). Click Join Server.

Tips

  • Enable automatic backups under the Backups tab so you never lose your world.
  • Install plugins or mods via Files — upload to the plugins or mods folder depending on your platform.
  • Use op <username> in the console to give yourself admin rights.
