Getting Started with Your Rust Server

How to set up your Rust server, choose a map, and invite your friends — ready to build bases and survive together.

Getting Started with Your Rust Server

Ready to build bases and survive in Rust? Here's how to get your server running.

1. Find your server in the control panel

Go to My Services and open your Rust server. You'll land on the console tab, where you can see the server's status and logs.

2. Choose your wipe cycle and map

Under Startup you can set:

  • +server.seed — generates a new map from a seed number
  • +server.worldsize — the size of the map (default 3000-4500)
  • +server.maxplayers — maximum number of players

If you change the seed or worldsize, delete the old map file under Filesserver/<identity>/ to generate a new map on next boot.

3. Start the server

Click Start. The first boot generates the map and can take 5-15 minutes depending on worldsize — this is normal.

4. Connect to the server

Open Rust, press F1 to open the console, and type:

client.connect your-ip:port

You'll find the IP and port at the top of the control panel.

5. Install Oxide/uMod (optional)

If you want to use plugins, install Oxide via the Startup tab by switching to the Oxide version of the server. Restart afterward and upload plugins to oxide/plugins.

Tips

  • Set up automatic wipes under Schedules if you want to follow the weekly Rust wipe.
  • Enable backups before a wipe so you can restore bases if something goes wrong.
  • See our guide on enabling PvE on your Rust server if you want a calmer community.
